Important South African Studio Potters 

Not a comprehensive list of all the important South African Potters, this is simply a small list of the Studio Potters who are widely recognised in South Africa and abroad, for their outstanding work.

Bosch, Esias
b. 1923 Winburg Orange Free State.
Early Aloe mark discontinued in the 1950s, since then not usually marked.
Studied Fine Arts at The University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
1949 - 1952 Studied in the United kingdom, one year at the Central school of Art in London the next two years working at Winchcombe Pottery with Raymond Finch and with Michael Cardew in Cornwall.
1952 - 1954 Taught Ceramics at Durban Technical College.
1954 - 1956 Taught Ceramics at Pretoria Art School.
Studio at Die Randjie near White River.
Morris, Tim
b. 1941. d. 1990.
Studied St. Martin School of Arts in London, London University, Central School of Art.
Potters Worked as throwers etc. 
Chris Green, Andy Orkin, Jeremy Zinn, Elmaa (Surname?), Peter Yele, George (Surname?) Did slab work. 
Studio in Muldersdrif  Transvaal.
Mark Similar To Thelma Marcussen.
Rabinowitz, Hyme
b. 1920 Concordia Namaqualand. d. 2009.
1956 Worked at Tregenna Hill Pottery, Cornwall with Kenneth Quick.
1961 ‐ 1962 With Esias Bosch at White River.
1966 ‐ 1967 With Michael Cardew at Wenfordbridge, Cornwall.
Walford, Andrew
 b.1942 in the United Kingdom.
1947 Arrived in South Africa.
Apprenticed at Walsh Marais Studio Durban, then with Sammy Liebermann at Liebermann Pottery Johannesburg.
Visited Gustavsberg Pottery Sweden with Stig Lindberg & Lisa Larson.
Visited Bernard Leach & Lucie Rie.
Stayed a short while with Shoji Hamada.
Taught Ceramics at Hamburg Academy.
Studio in Shongweni Kwazulu‐Natal.
1958 ‐ 1963 ‘AW’ painted.
1976 ‐ Present ‘OM’ sign.
Various impressed designs as decoration.

Van Der Merwe, Maritjie

b.1935 Rhodesia.
Studied at the University of California.
1963 Grahamstown.
1969 Studied at the Chicago Art Institute.
1971 Taught Pottery at Rorke’s Drift.
